Ivan Mihaljevic & Side Effects - Counterclockwise

I'll admit, I was skeptical about this album from the get go. The first thought to cross my mind was that this artist shared a striking resemblance to Creed vocally and melodically. Judging by the previous band's history, this should not be considered a compliment.

Luckily, I maintained focus and decided to forge ahead and was pleasantly surprised. Although there are some similarities to Creed, not enough to make me throw my head phones down. The band delves into a straight ahead rock vibe reminiscent of late 90's Stone Temple Pilots.

His voice even tends to remind the listener of Scott Weiland, I guess it's safe to say that the lead singer has a voice that would have fit in with most grunge/alt rock acts around the turn of the century.

The real treasure here is the guitar mastery. Yep: a real treasure!

There are many intricate solo's that seem to be woven finely into the song's fabric creating twisting melodies that fit surprisingly well together. At certain times in the album they almost seem to develop a prog rock sound that adds texture to the driving guitars. Undoubtedly, they do have many endearing qualities.

They are undeniably better than you're run of the mill radio rock act, are talented musicians, and have a way of distancing themselves from the plethora of similar acts muddled together around the turn of the century. The ideas are very good and Counterclockwise is definitely more than a first-class foundation.
